Suke Quto’s most prominent flavor is clean citrus zest, with a creamy foundation reminiscent of lemon meringue and key lime pie. These flavors open into floral aromatics that move from dried rose to fresh blooms as the cup cools. All of these more delicate notes are supported with notes of green tea - most closely resembling the floral scented tannins of a jasmine blossom sencha.
Tesfaye Bekele, who established the Suke Quto washing station, is one of the farmers most responsible for putting Guji on the specialty coffee map. He grew up around coffee, but started working in Natural Resource and Environmental Protection for the government of Ethiopia, covering the boarder between Guji and Boreda. When bush fires destroyed nearly 5000 acres of farmland, Tesfaye sought alternative solutions with the villagers in this suddenly deforested land. He encouraged them to replant the forest, adding coffee for diversity. His commitment to his own farm is what eventually convinced the locals to join him in producing coffee.
We have worked with coffees from Tesfaye’s farms for many years and are excited to bring you this coffee from his very first coffee project.
