Luyombe Peaberry - Tanzania

This peaberry lot from Luyombe is bright and juicy; starting off with a vibrant, yet sweet, pink lemonade note. Almost immediately we see the flavor of banana candy which takes on more a banana milkshake note as the cup cools. All of this bright sweetness is complimented with floral notes of rose blossom and tart hibiscus. This is a bright and complex, but still incredibly enjoyable cup after cup.

The Luyombe coffee growing region is most well known for their peaberries; a natural mutation occurring in 5-12% of all coffee cherries. Typically, two coffee seeds develop face-to-face in the coffee cherry. When one fails to develop, the remaining seed grows into a smaller, more dense, ball shaped seed. Many coffee mills separate these out as an abnormality. Often times, however, these beans will have more concentrated sweetness. The increased density and change in shape also affect how these bean behave in a roaster. The thermodynamics around the bean and the rate of thermo transfer shift from a comparative “typical” coffee seed.

While this is the first year we have offerings from Tanzania, this is the second one we’ve featured this year. This coffee is a joy that we look forward to bringing back in the years to come.
