Karindundu - Kenya | Gold Label
Papaya, Wild Strawberry & Chardonnay
PROCESS: Washed
VARIETIES: Batian, SL28, SL34, & Ruiru 11
The selection from Karindundu is complex and juicy with a wide range of fruit flavors and a buttery finish. On the first sip we’re tasting tropical fruit with fresh papaya as a standout. As the cup cools the acidity pushes forward with notes of wild strawberry, green papaya, and kiwi fruit. The complex fruit notes are supported by a white wine juiciness that carries a buttery note, reminding us of a bright Chardonnay.
The Karindundu coffee factory is located 1 km from Karatina in the Nyeri district. It supports 513 coffee farmers, with nearly one third being women. These producers grow a mix of crops alongside coffee, with the average farm consisting of only 300 coffee trees on an half acre plot. The mill provides educational support for its members and operates a demonstration plot to teach and explore proper methods.
Kenyan coffees are graded and sold based on the green bean size. Historically, AA’s are the most highly sought, as it is the largest common size. This lot is an AB separation. Over the years we have come to find AB’s more preferable as they are typically more dense with a sweeter cup profile and more uniform roast.
