Itumpi is bright and complex. The first flavor that stands out is a vibrant guava fruitiness with a candy-like sweetness that reminds us of the green Starburst candy. Cooling, the fruitiness rounds out and a buttery note comes into to support the brightness. Throughout the cup there is a soft hint of warm spices dancing between cinnamon and nutmeg. The tart and vibrant fruit notes, mixed with the soft spices and smooth buttery foundation, all come together making those final sips taste like a fresh apple tartlet.

The Itumpi washing station, located in the Mbozi district of Tanzania’s Songwa region, supports the 160 registered members of the Agricultural Marketing Co-operative Society. Each day the mill receives fresh coffee cherry from 12:30 to 6:00 pm with the depulping process beginning at 2 pm. After the coffee has been depulped, it is graded the parchment is separated into quality grades to be fermented for 8 to 10 hours before drying on raised beds for 7 to 10 days. Prior to export, the coffee is again separated into size and density grade, with this lot being a AA, the second largest.
